Job Summary

AECOM is seeking a

Safety Instrumented System (SIS) Engineer to be based in our Aiken, SC office. Should possess strong technical and leadership skills with the ability to identify SIS related technical issues and propose and influence effective solutions for our customers.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Perform a range of design engineering related to SIS design, analysis or review tasks under minimal supervision.

  • Interface with customers at all levels from quotation of work to final design and test activities, SIS design.

  • Conduct site visits, experimental investigations and analyze engineering problems, propose solutions and alternatives, and provide recommendations for SIS Systems.

  • Provide SIS support for customers to ensure compliance with ISA-84 / IEC 61511, and other functional safety standards as required:

  • Reviews SIS related documents.

  • Provide technical consulting to customers.

  • Provide status reports and non-conformances to the Senior SIS Engineer.

  • Participate in SIS acceptance testing and commissioning to ensure compliance and effectiveness of the safety instrumented functions (SIFs).

  • Perform and write functional safety plans for audits and assessments.

  • Coordinate and work closely with other engineering, logistics, financial, and program management disciplines to define system specifications and requirements.

  • Identify proper installations of SIS Systems (perform gap analysis of SIS Systems existing systems and new installations).

  • Perform gap analysis on OSHA1910.119 to IEC 61511.

  • Provide Front End Loading from HazOp to LOPA.

  • Support customers in HazOps as the SIS subject matter expert.

  • Write and approve proof-test for end-to-end testing or partial-stroke testing.

  • Perform IPL rationalization studies.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program and 5-10 years of experience (preferred Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial, or Nuclear Engineering degree)

  • Certified Functional Safety Professional CFSP or Certified Functional Safety Expert CFSE

  • Experience developing SIL calculations

  • Field Experience on SIS Systems (Instrumentation and Controls)

  • Process safety management ISA-84 / IEC 61511 experience (OSHA 1910.119)

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Word, EXCEL, Power Point, Project)

  • Candidate must be able to travel on business as needed. (25-50% Travel)

  • Due to the nature of work, candidate must be a US Citizen.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Significant plant experience

  • Basic understanding of process plant equipment and processes

  • Instrumentation and control knowledge

  • SIS, PLC programming & configuration experience

  • FAT, SAT and commissioning experience

  • Understanding of functional safety and safety integrity level (SIL) concepts

  • Proof-Test knowledge

  • Field experience on properly installed SIS Systems

  • Perform independent protection layer (IPL) rationalization and gap analysis studies
