Job Summary

The Transportation Business Line of AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented professional engineer to provide senior technical and leadership guidance for our team of Traffic/ITS engineering professionals. The technical emphasis of the group is traffic control and traffic simulation projects in urban and transit-oriented locations throughout the DC Metro and northern Virginia areas. This position is located in our Arlington, Virginia office.

Our Arlington Transportation practice is truly multi-disciplined and is focused on providing collaborative, holistic solutions to transportation and design. The ability to work with other engineering disciplines at various locations, both internal and external to AECOM is a must. This position involves working in a supervisory mode with a close-knit team of design professionals where effective communication is an important part of the job

The successful candidate will serve as a department manager and project manager on various projects, and will be involved with client development and engagement efforts. Candidate will also be responsible for supervising and mentoring staff, growing the team, monitoring and ensuring sufficient workload, financial reporting, and adherence to AECOM policies. Strong emphasis will be placed on leadership and innovation, technical experience, high quality deliverables, writing and communication skills, and the ability to manage projects and project team’s budget and schedule. The appropriately qualified applicant will be able to demonstrate an established design oriented career in a variety of transportation projects.

he responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Actively develop client relationships, business prospects and lead technical project pursuits

  • Interact with project Systems Integrators.

  • Interact with multi-disciplined and multi-office teams.

  • Manage and perform development of traffic engineering signal design plans and specifications

  • Manage and perform traffic engineering studies and traffic signal design in accordance with local and FHWA standards,

  • Manage engineering analysis, review and preparation of traffic impact studies, corridor and safety studies for both planning and design projects,

  • Manage and perform traffic capacity analysis, operational simulation analysis, and preparation of signal timing plans.

  • Manage and prepare signing and marking plans and construction maintenance of traffic plans.

  • Perform planning, analysis and design development for ITS implementation projects on roadway networks.

  • Prepare written reports and presentations of project findings that support moving projects into design.

  • Perform analytical tasks including data collection and analysis.

  • Develop planning documents.

  • Develop preliminary and final designs.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer with the ability to acquire registrations in Virginia and the District of Columbia

  • 15+ years of experience in Traffic Engineering and ITS systems

  • Excellent communication and writing skills

  • Ability to work under tight deadlines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with DDOT and VDOT standards, process and procedures.

  • Strong knowledge of ITS with experience in analysis, surveillance, inventory and support of a variety of highway and Transportation Management Systems in order to design, manage and monitor the performance of electrical installations and transportation management systems.

  • Transit Operations Experience – Bus Rapid and Light Rail Transit system analysis; Transit Signal Priority System; travel time studies, reliability and transit preferential treatments.

  • Roundabout analysis and design experience; ability to develop and review alternative concepts and perform analysis using programs such as SIDRA and other recommended software.
