Job Description
The Environmental Business Line of AECOM is actively seeking an experienced and hard-working Hazardous Waste Environmental Scientist to support regulatory compliance and safety of the hazardous waste program at Fort Belvoir. The appropriately qualified applicant will demonstrate experience and working knowledge of hazardous waste management and regulatory requirements.
The position is the Lead Hazardous Waste Specialist and will have oversight over one (1) junior personnel on-site who would be directed with this position. This position is a full-time on-site position. There is no telework availability with this position.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Inspecting hazardous waste satellite accumulation points and<90-day storage sites for compliance with state and federal requirements (RCRA)
Operating a hazardous waste storage facility
Scheduling and overseeing hazardous turn-ins, pick-ups, and documentation
Properly packaging and storing hazardous waste
Completing and maintaining facility inspection logs
Preparing for visits from state hazardous waste inspectors and answering questions
Preparing hazardous waste, non-hazardous solid waste, and universal waste for disposal, including preparing waste profiles, bills of lading, shipping/tracking paperwork, and labeling as necessary
Transporting hazardous waste from temporary storage units within the installation.
Ensuring compliance of transportation and disposal of hazardous waste disposal agents is maintained
Maintaining cradle to grave records of waste transported and disposed of off site
Maintaining inventories of hazardous waste received
Verifying training requirements are met prior to receiving or managing hazardous waste
Maintaining digital records (database) of hazardous waste documents, personnel, and organization records
Consolidating compatible waste streams to optimize utilization of container capacity
Developing and submitting equipment maintenance / repair requests
Maintaining cleanliness of the hazardous waste facilities
Preparing reports and documentation
Assisting with spill response
Reviewing manifests prior to government signature and maintaining manifest records/files
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
BA/BS + 4 years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
A minimum of two (2) years of experience working in a hazardous waste inspection program on site at a DoD or Federal Installation
Valid Driver’s License and as a condition of employment must be able to pass AECOM’s Motor Vehicle Records review.
Must be a US Citizen capable of passing a National Agency Check, which will be required to gain access to Government IT Systems
Preferred Qualifications:
Current 40-hour HAZWOPER Certification (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response per 29 CFR1910.120)
Preferable to possess certifications required under Department of Transportation (DOT) HM 181, HM 215a, and HM 126f
Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) generator training covering waste profiling, manifesting, and management requirements
RCRA Biennial Report data collection and reporting experience
OSHA forklift operator training
Military experience and familiarity with relevant military facilities and organizations
Experience in hazardous waste management activities
Experience completing hazardous waste turn-ins, shipping, and tracking documents; as well as container labeling
Experience conducting daily operations of a hazardous waste program
Must have strong computer skills and capability to prepare and update reports and other documentation
Experience developing and maintaining hazardous waste management procedures and practices
Thorough knowledge of safety procedures for proper waste handling

Strong work ethic and professional demeanor
Strong oral communication, written communication, and interpersonal skills

Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications. The expected range is $61,000.00 - $100,000.00.
