Job Description

AECOM is seeking a Project Manager - Ecologist with experience overseeing natural resources investigations and permitting in the Mid-Atlantic US (VA and MD focus).

This position has excellent career growth potential within the leading, worldwide environmental services provider to industry and government. We are seeking a dynamic individual, capable of managing environmental impact assessment and permitting projects for a diverse set of projects that include federal and local government, transportation, energy, utilities, and data center development.

A successful candidate will mentor staff, provide technical expertise to internal staff and clients, and coordinate permit approvals with regulatory officials. This position can be based in anyone of the following offices: Norfolk, Glen Allen, or Arlington, VA, or Germantown, MD.

The responsibilities of this position include, but may not be limited to, the following:

  • Manage and perform consulting projects to scope, schedule, and budget, learning and applying AECOM’s project management systems and software. The candidate will accelerate through AECOM’s in-house Project Management certification program within the first year of employment.

  • Coordinate, manage, and direct project field and data collection efforts.

  • Develop, manage, and deliver business strategy and tactics, high-quality proposals, and documents and report deliverables.

  • Serve as an interface with clients and regulatory personnel on complex projects and through business development initiatives.

  • This role requires a high degree of self-motivation and the ability to work independently with limited supervision, as well as in a collaborative team environment

  • Perform detailed work in a highly organized manner

  • Provide technical support to the Mid-Atlantic Environmental Planning & Permitting (EPP) Department, East EPP Practice, individual Project Managers, and inter-disciplinary business development activities.

  • Collaborate with other AECOM offices, practices, and business lines.

  • Serve as a mentor to junior and mid-level staff.

  • Perform client visits and field activities that require work outside the office and overnight travel.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • BA/BS and 6+ years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

  • 6+ years of experience managing projects and teams to scope, schedule, and budget

  • Thorough knowledge of CWA, ESA, NHPA, NEPA, and/or other federal, state, and local regulations

  • Demonstrated experience managing projects, interdisciplinary teams, and workload

  • Experience in team management and scheduling of staff and resources to ensure on time and on budget project delivery

  • Experience preparing proposals, cost estimates, schedules, and change orders

  • Self-authored writing sample may be requested

  • Some occasional overnight regional travel may be required

  • Valid Driver’s License required with a good driving record

  • Due to the nature of the work, US Citizenship is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Biology, Ecology, Natural resources, Wetlands management, or an earth science-related field preferred

  • PMP or other project management certification is a plus; candidate will be required to complete AECOM Project Management Certification.

  • 10+ years of experience providing environmental assessment and permitting compliance support desired

  • Wetland delineation and permitting experience in Maryland and/or Virginia desired

  • Experience with wetland and/or stream restoration and/or natural resources damage assessment is a plus

  • Demonstrated experience successfully managing Client relationships with an ability to generate new work for the Team, Office, and Company

  • Experience with regulator and stakeholder negotiations

  • Have led teams of professionals in executing wetland delineations, threatened and endangered species studies, environmental permitting support, and other related studies/assessments/analyses
