Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Senior Traffic Engineer for immediate employment in Sandy Springs, GA. AECOM is proud to provide our employees with exciting, challenging projects.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for the design and planning of transportation/traffic facilities and projects and proposes changes to existing roadways or devices to improve traffic flow and safety.

  • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, codes, regulations; conducts research and maintains an awareness of new issues, methods, equipment, trends and advances in the profession; attends meetings, workshops, and training sessions as appropriate.

  • Attends meetings, serves on committees, and makes presentations as needed; participates on review committees, policy committees, safety committees, ad hoc committees, and represents the department at community events.

  • Plans, organizes, directs, coordinates, and provides oversight of the signal and signage contractors within the Public Works Department, with focus on developing traffic-engineering assessments, resolving traffic requests and complaints, and recommending traffic improvements.

  • Serves as the lead for the City’s traffic calming program and applies/updates the approved Traffic Calming Policy and coordinates with citizens on traffic calming request.

  • Reviews/approves special permit applications related to road and lane closures and compliance with pertinent codes/MUTCD and coordinates with the City’s Police and Fire departments on special events, lane closures, road closures, and other items.

  • Reviews/approves recommended traffic control devices and striping plans.

  • Reviews/approves sight distance measurements by other engineers or field staff.

  • Monitors follow-up and responses to citizen complaints, City Management and City Council Member requests; ensures service requests are prioritized based on importance/priority and ensures appropriate follow-up communication;

  • Monitors development related to Traffic and Transportation Unit Services’ on-going work activities and special projects; evaluates their impact and implements policy and procedure improvements;

  • Researches and recommends innovative solutions to policy needs, traffic calming, intersection operations, and traffic management based on the City’s needs and desires.

  • Researches and prepares technical briefings, reports and correspondence.

  • Visits project sites and provides rotational after hours on-call support as management back up for up to one week per month and support for Emergency Operations.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil or traffic engineering or a closely related field

  • 5+ years recent experience in traffic or transportation engineering

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver’s License

  • Professional Engineering licensure

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in traffic or civil engineering;

  • Knowledgeable of traffic and transportation practices, including emergency operations, as necessary in the completion of daily responsibilities;

  • Municipal traffic-related experience;

  • Is able to assemble information and make written reports and documents in a concise, clear and effective manner. Is able to use independent judgment as situations warrant;

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills as well as the ability to write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech;

  • Ability to coordinate, manage, and/or correlate data. Includes exercising judgment in determining time, place and/or sequence of operations, referencing data analyses to determine necessity for revision of organizational components, and in the formulation of operational strategy;

  • Ability to read blueprints surveys and job specifications;

  • Strong inter-personal relationship skills with the ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other employees, government officials, contractors, suppliers, and the general public -- using tact, patience and courtesy; and

  • Understanding of traffic signals and adaptive traffic signals and has ability to explain the operations of signals to residents and non-traffic engineers.

  • Employee must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all safety policies and policies and must be willing to report and/or act on safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel;

  • Requires the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment; dangerous and/or hazardous environments; must be flexible and able to adapt to frequent changes in work priorities;

  • Incumbent is expected to meet attendance standards as determined by management. Employee must be available and willing to work according to the assigned schedule. Must be available and willing to work overtime (including daily, weekend and holidays) as determined by management as necessary to meet the business needs;

  • Incumbent will perform duties in a combination of outside work and an office environment. Job requires employee to perform duties at a job site; at times working along and at times working very closely with others;

  • Position requires outside work, subject to all types of weather and temperature conditions. Incumbents may be exposed to chemicals, solvents, fumes, smoke, and gases and various types of surfaces, including slippery or uneven surfaces;

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, the use of both eyes and the ability to adjust focus;

  • Must be able to move or carry objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally and up to twenty pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for active work.

  • Rotational after hours on-call support as management back up for up to one week per month.

  • Support for Emergency Operations as directed by City Management.
