AECOM Ecologist II in Birmingham, Alabama

Job Summary

The Transportation Group of AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Ecologist for immediate employment in the Birmingham, AL office. The candidate will join an excellent team with significant career growth potential.

This Ecologist position will support the multi-discipline environmental group in transportation. This candidate will serve as an Ecologist and perform tasks ranging from project management, fieldwork, report writing, data collection and compilation, and GIS mapping among other duties.

The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Plans and performs field tasks under general supervision, such as wetland and stream surveys, and surveys for suitable habitat and presence of protected species.

  • Gathers data and other information to be used in the preparation of environmental reports; compiles and organizes data collected by others.

  • Prepares reports including: Water of the U.S., Habitat Assessment, Species Survey Reports and 404 Permit Applications.

  • Prepares data and scientific documents to include maps/figures, technical reports, assessments of effects, and agency coordination.

  • Utilizes basic scientific principles, theories, practices, and existing technologies to develop solutions for technical problems with limited scope.

  • Works under the supervision of senior staff but is capable of completing most complex tasks with minimal supervision.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Natural Resources, or related field

  • 2 or more years of experience in surveying wetlands and streams using USACE standards and guidance; familiar with the flora and fauna of the southeastern regions required

  • 2 or more years of experience with Federal regulatory processes, including Section 404 Permitting, Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)

  • Experience with ArcGIS is preferred

  • Experience with GPS field data collection is preferred

  • Availability for 30% overnight travel

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in performing ecology surveys and preparing reports with linear construction projects (e.g., roadway projects, utility projects, pipeline projects, etc.)

  • Experience with USACE (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) permit process

  • Experience with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents, including Categorical Exclusions (CEs), Environmental Assessments (EAs) and Environmental Impact Statements (EISs)

  • High degree of professionalism, self-motivation, and desire to work in a collaborative team environment

  • Excellent analytical and communication skills, including both written and oral expertise

  • Self-motivated, driven, and hard working

  • Experience working in a fast-paced consulting environment

  • Demonstrated ability to work on a wide range of projects, within interdisciplinary teams, and balance a demanding workload
