AECOM Senior Traffic Engineer in Chicago, Illinois

Job Summary

AECOM is seeking an experienced transportation professional in Chicago, IL focused on traffic engineering projects in Illinois and other states in the Midwest as needed. The Civil Engineer III will support the management and execution of traffic engineering services on transportation projects and help lead, manage, and coordinate projects and staff located in Chicago. The desired candidate would have a strong background successfully executing highway/roadway projects for IDOT, CDOT or other transportation agencies in Illinois. Project work would focus on traffic capacity/operational analysis, traffic microsimulation modeling, traffic safety studies, traffic signal operations and design, maintenance of traffic design, and detour planning and could also include Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), emerging technologies, and a variety of advanced mobility solutions across all modes of transportation.

We are looking for a candidate who can execute technical work in the areas described but also grow into a leadership role within our organization, contributing to client management, business development and staff management. The candidate will have the opportunity to mentor younger staff and work alongside senior engineers across the U.S. to gain a better understanding of the transportation industry and to further advance their professional career. This position is expected to begin immediately in Chicago, IL.

Job Responsibilities:

  • The candidate will need to be a forward-looking team player who can work collaboratively with others, in a dynamic setting to support external client engagement, project management, business development, and internal leadership. The responsibilities of the role will evolve based on the qualifications of the candidate and their success in performing their duties. The core responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform and manage the execution of traffic engineering services for planning and design efforts on transportation projects

  • Support growth of AECOM’s traffic engineering practice in Illinois

  • Perform traffic studies, capacity analyses, and traffic signal design

Minimum Requirements

  • BA/BS + 4 YORE or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

  • The selected candidate must pass a pre-employment Motor Vehicle Registration Screening (MVR).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field from accredited university + 4 years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE)

  • Registration as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE)

  • 7+ years of experience in traffic and transportation engineering

  • Experience working with public sector agencies in the transportation sector

  • Strong understanding of traffic engineering principles and mobility pertaining to highways, arterials, and local streets

  • Experience in proposal development

  • Active participation and presence in professional organizations

  • Excellent written, graphical, and verbal communication skills

  • Strong problem solving, analytical and research skills

  • Ability to balance various project responsibilities and deadlines while maintaining professionalism and quality

  • Team-oriented and able to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision
