Job Description

Ecologist III

AECOM is actively seeking an experienced, exceptionally talented Ecologist/ Permitting Specialist for immediate employment in the Conshohocken, Mechanicsburg, or Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania office locations. The successful candidate will work in an interdisciplinary collaborative environment. This position provides unlimited career growth potential while working with an excellent team comprised of a variety of staff and project managers in support of AECOM’s clients, including natural gas, electric utilities, and renewable industries. AECOM’s Environmental Planning and Permitting group conducts a wide variety of projects including impact assessments, environmental field assessments (i.e. wetland delineations, species surveys, etc.), environmental regulatory permitting, utility siting and licensing, environmental inspection, and others. The group primarily works on projects in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and New Jersey as part of AECOM’s regional practice group. There are opportunities to work on large-scale projects or projects further afield than the typical project range if the candidate is interested.

The position reports to either the Conshohocken, Mechanicsburg, or Pittsburgh, office. Remote work may be considered. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Serving as a field and technical lead for stream, wetland, wildlife habitat assessments and other field surveys and supporting and mentoring junior staff.

  • Technical, detailed report writing for field survey summaries and permitting and siting tasks.

  • Permitting and environmental impact assessment lead for federal, state and local permit application preparation and coordination with the reviewing agencies (USFWS, USACE, state and local agencies).

  • Siting analysis, including qualitative and quantitative reviews for greenfield or brownfield utility projects.

  • Coordinating with internal teams such as Cultural Resources, T&E species experts, Civil Engineering and other project support teams.

  • Ability to work as a team lead or independently.

  • Attending meetings held by client for projects and reporting back to the AECOM project manager.

  • Assisting Senior Staff with business development activities, including proposals, pre-qualifications, and relationship building with clients and prospective clients.

  • Periodically, work may require extended hours, remotely, night work, weekend work, and/or overnight travel.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements :

  • Minimum Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental. Science, Ecology, Environmental Studies, Biology, or related field.

  • 4 + years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

  • The position may require occasional fieldwork, and the candidate must be able to travel (including overnight).

  • Valid Driver's License and clean driving record.

  • US Citizenship required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of consulting experience within the utilities industry.

  • 4+ years of permitting application preparation, supporting data collection and review, and preparation of scientific documents including wetland delineations stream assessments, technical reports, Section 401/404 permitting, other environmental federal, state or local permit applications, and mitigation requirements. Technical writing experience specifically about authoring siting studies, and/or FERC resource reports, and/or NEPA analysis preferred.

  • Experience in multiple states within the mid-Atlantic and eastern United States (PA, OH, IN, MI, MD, DE, WV and/or NJ preferred)

  • Riparian, Coastal, and Tidal ecosystem and permitting experience.

  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS products. Strong understanding of Geographic Information System (GIS) processes and capabilities. GIS Certification certification/degree preferred.

  • Experience working with electric utility, natural gas, and/or renewable energy clients

  • Experience in a fast-paced consulting environment, delivering high-quality technical documentation and permit applications.

  • Safety training (i.e. OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hours, CPR)

  • High degree of self-motivation.

  • Excellent and relevant references.
