Job Description

AECOM is actively seeking a mid-level Environmental Scientist for employment in Mechanicsburg or Conshohocken, PA office. The successful candidate will work in an interdisciplinary team-oriented environment. This position provides unlimited career growth potential while working with an excellent team comprised of a variety of staff and project managers in support of AECOM’s clients, including water, utilities, transportation and other industries. AECOM’s Impact Assessment and Permitting group conducts a wide variety of projects including impact assessments, environmental field assessments (i.e. wetland delineations, species surveys, etc.), environmental regulatory permitting, utility siting and licensing, environmental inspection, and environmental compliance (inspections, sampling, etc.) and many others. The group primarily works on projects in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Ohio, West Virginia and adjacent states as part of AECOM’s regional ecological group. There are opportunities to work on large-scale projects or projects further afield than the typical project range if the candidate is interested.

The position reports to Conshohocken, PA and teleworking may be considered. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Performs standard scientific work requiring application of techniques and procedures.

  • Detects problems when using standardized procedures because of the sample conditions, difficulties with equipment, etc.

  • Assists senior staff with various stages of the project such as data collection, field review or inspection, sampling and reporting.

  • Assist with desktop reviews and permitting assessment.

  • Assist with field work including wetland delineations, site walkdowns, compliance inspections and others.

  • Coordinating with internal teams such as Water Resources, Remediation, Civil Engineering, EHS, and other project support teams.

  • Ability to work with a team or independently.

  • Periodically, work requires extended hours, remotely, night work, and/or overnight travel.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental. Science, Ecology, Environmental Studies, Biology, or related field.

  • 2 + years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

  • The position requires fieldwork, and the candidate must be able to travel (including overnight).

  • Good driving record and a valid driver’s license is required.

  • US Citizenship required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of data collection, data review, and preparation of scientific documents including water and/or soil sampling and reports, wetland delineations stream assessments, technical reports, Section 401/404 permitting, NPDES permitting, other environmental federal, state or local permit applications, and/or mitigation requirements.

  • Technical writing experience specifically about authoring siting studies.

  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS products. Strong understanding of Geographic Information System (GIS) processes and capabilities. GIS Certification certification/degree preferred.

  • Experience working with electric utility, natural gas, and/or renewable energy clients

  • Experience working in a fast-paced consulting environment.

  • Experience delivering high-quality technical documentation and permit applications.

  • Trailer hauling certification and/or boat maintenance experience.

  • Safety training (i.e. OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hours)

  • High degree of self-motivation.

  • Ability to lead a field or technical team.

  • Excellent and relevant references.
