AECOM Geotechnical Engineer II in Fort Worth, Texas

Job Summary

The Water Business Line of AECOM is actively seeking a Geotechnical Engineer with 2 to 5 years of experience and their EIT or recent PE. The position is located in one of the Texas offices, including Dallas, Houston, or Austin, or in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, LA. Other locations within Texas and Louisiana will be considered based on person’s specific experience and type of work available in the area.

The Water team brings together the skills of project managers, civil engineers, H&H engineers, geotechnical engineers, structural engineers, and environmental and planning specialists to provide integrated, sustainable and cost-effective solutions. Projects include flood risk reduction systems, dams, levees, floodwalls and floodgates, water supply, tunnels/trenchless technology, roads water/wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, pipe networks, sewerage, and outfalls.

You will work alongside our project managers throughout the project design and delivery cycle, making technical decisions in various design stages of water and wastewater utility projects to include carrying out feasibility studies, reference designs, detailed designs, and preparing reports and technical specifications. You may be asked to mentor junior staff which will call for excellent leadership and communication skills.

This position is for a Geotechnical Engineer (EIT or new PE) with 2 to 5 years of relevant experience. You must be able to demonstrate a positive can-do attitude and be customer focused, a critical thinker and problem solver, and ready to apply your knowledge and skill sets in order to establish a rewarding, long-term career utilizing principles and methods for geotechnical engineering projects. The Geotechnical Engineering Team in Texas is unique, as it works on a variety of large, high profile projects for a variety of industries including Water, Transportation, Architecture, Environmental, and Construction. This involves site investigations, soil laboratory testing interpretations, all manner of geotechnical analyses and calculations, rehabilitation designs, alternatives analyses, etc. This team is also unique in that it has always worked remotely for the majority of the work week, so you must have very strong communication skills and the ability to work with a team across the nation and the world. Candidate will, under supervision and mentorship:

  • Participate in field assignments that will include soil and rock borings, test pits, CPT soundings, geophysical testing; geotechnical instrumentation design and construction; and inspection of the construction of geotechnical features like retaining walls, foundations, dams, levees, floodwalls, and tunnels.

  • Have the opportunity to travel to and work in locations both within the USA and around the world.

  • Mentor and train junior geotechnical engineers.

  • Design shallow and deep foundations, earth retaining structures, ground improvement, flood risk reduction structures, embankments and cut slopes, and both soft and hard rock tunnels.

  • Develop geotechnical design parameters based on laboratory data results.

  • Prepare and review Geotechnical Reports, Alternative Analysis Reports, etc.

  • Use computer programs including GeoStudio, UTexas4, LPILE, GROUP, SHAFT, Plaxis, FLAC, Settle3D, and MathCAD for geotechnical analyses.

  • Review design plans and specifications and for compliance with geotechnical recommendations and communicate with multiple disciplines and provide design improvement recommendations.

  • Have the opportunity to meet with clients and participate in proposals.

You can work toward obtaining the AECOM Project Management Certification, if you want to go into Project Management. This is not a requirement or even necessarily a preference, but it would be encouraged after a year of working at AECOM and 5 to 10 years in Geotechnical Engineering, only if you are interested.

Applicants should be prepared to travel a minimum of 10% to support other offices and/or AECOM construction sites, as needed. Applicants will be expected to demonstrate a strong technical knowledge of the principles of soil and rock mechanics, geotechnical design, manage their own time and budget, and effectively work within a multi-disciplinary team that is spread across the United States, or in some cases, the world.

Minimum Requirements

  • BA/BS + 2 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

  • Engineer in Training Certification is required. Applicant will be working toward Professional Engineering License, or recently obtained it.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduated from ABET accredited university with Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering

  • Master’s Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, or in progress.

  • Prior experience = 2-5 years of practical applied knowledge in the industry

  • Must have strong technical progression within geotechnical engineering

  • Proficient in GeoStudio

  • Experience in UTexas4, LPILE, GROUP, SHAFT, Plaxis, FLAC, Settle3D, and MathCAD

  • Some experience or knowledge in planning and completing drilling, field investigations, laboratory testing, advanced material characterization, seepage analysis, slope stability analysis, settlement, and construction of dams, levees, channel improvements, and other heavy earthwork projects.

  • Ability to travel 10% or more, as needed

  • Ability to support marketing effort in pursuing alternative delivery work with a focus on geotechnical engineering

  • A positive attitude that motivates the project team.

  • Ability to work on fast paced complex projects

  • Ability to work on multiple ongoing projects at the same time

  • Willing to work overtime if needed to complete a task to meet the client’s schedule or request
