Job Description
AECOM is seeking a Civil Engineer to be based in Germantown, MD.
This position is expected to begin in October 1, 2023
The Water Business Unit of AECOM is actively seeking a proactive Staff Geotechnical Engineer. This position is in our Germantown, MD, office in the DC Metro Area.
The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, those listed below:
Perform geotechnical tasks and working closely with other disciplines to meet the project needs, under the supervision of senior engineers
Oversee subsurface investigation programs.
Adhere to AECOM safety culture and maintain a safe work environment
Assign and review data from geotechnical laboratory testing
Perform design calculations for pavements, shallow and deep foundations, tunnel components, retaining walls, temporary and permanent support of excavation, seismic site class, liquefaction
Perform settlement analysis, global and external stability analyses, seepage analyses, ground improvement evaluation
Assist the geophysics group in data collection during geophysical surveys
Prepare engineering reports and memoranda
Perform construction oversight
Find opportunities to bring innovation to the operations using data science, data analytics, and artificial intelligence.
Participate in local professional events to represent AECOM
Travel for projects domestically and internationally for one week to a month at a time.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirement:
BA/BS in Geotechnical Engineering
Valid Driver’s license
Preferred Skills/Experience:
M.S. in Geotechnical Engineering
Thorough understanding of the concepts of soil mechanics and foundation engineering
Understanding of the basic concepts of earthquake engineering
Experience with AutoCAD, gINT, MathCAD, Geostudio, and other geotechnical analyses software
A minimum of 6 months of demonstrated experience in the field and office through internships or full time employment.
EIT Certification
Ability to work in inclement weather
Ability to lift 50 lbs
Knowledge of geology within Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia
1 year of experience in monitoring construction and geotechnical exploration
Possess active or ability to obtain a security clearance
Experience with technical report writing
Strong written and oral communication, quantitative and interpersonal skills
Additional Information

This position may consist of occasional manual labor including hiking with a heavy pack, excavation with shovels, and moving heavy dirt. The work involves working outdoors and the engineer may encounter variable weather and field conditions.
