Job Description

AECOM is actively seeking an experienced, highly talented Mid-level Ecologist for immediate employment in the Houston, TX office. (Virtual in the state of Texas only.) The successful candidate will work in an interdisciplinary, team-oriented environment. This position provides unlimited career growth potential while working with a team comprised of a variety of staff and project managers in support of AECOM’s clients, including natural gas, electric utilities, and renewables.

AECOM’s Environmental Planning and Permitting (EPP) group conducts a variety of projects including impact assessments, environmental field assessments, environmental regulatory permitting, utility siting and licensing, environmental inspection, and many others. The group primarily works on projects in Texas, Louisiana, and adjacent states. There are opportunities to work on large-scale projects or projects further afield than the typical project range if the candidate is interested.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Stream, wetland, wildlife habitat assessments and other surveys

  • Leading wetland delineations and writing wetland delineation reports, function assessments, mitigation plans, and environmental compliance/permitting documents (Clean Water Act (CWA) permits, Section 401 and 404, or other permit applications).

  • Managing tasks and projects according to approved scopes of work and delivering quality reports on schedule and within budget.

  • Coordinating with various governmental agencies.

  • Preparing biological evaluations/assessments.

  • Leading field crews for wetland/waterbody and wildlife habitat assessments, including adherence to field safety requirements.

  • Assistance in preparation of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation, including Categorical Exclusions, Environmental Assessments, Findings of No Significant Impacts, and Environment Impact Statement sections

  • Assisting Senior Staff with business development activities, including proposals, pre-qualifications, and relationship building with clients and prospective clients.

  • Work may include extended hours, night work and/or overnight travel.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental. Science, Ecology, Environmental Studies, Biology, or related field.

  • 4 + years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

  • The position requires fieldwork, and the candidate must be able to travel (including overnight).

  • Good driving record and a valid driver’s license is required.

  • US Citizenship required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 6+ years of data collection, data review, and preparation of scientific documents including wetland delineations, stream assessments, technical reports, Section 401/404 permitting and mitigation requirements.

  • Technical writing experience specifically about authoring siting studies, and/or FERC resource reports, and/or NEPA analysis preferred.Experience with ESRI ArcGIS products. Strong understanding of Geographic Information System (GIS) processes and capabilities. GIS Certification certification/degree preferred.

  • Experience working with electric utility and natural gas.Experience working in a fast-paced consulting environment.Experience delivering high quality technical documentation and permit applications.

  • Experience as Deputy Project Manager on environmental planning projectsHigh degree of self-motivation and the ability to work independently with limited supervision, as well as in a collaborative team environment.

  • Excellent oral and written communication with ability to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical staff/management.Strong analytical, problem-solving.
