Job Description
AECOM is seeking a full-time engineer with knowledge of flood-resilient building design and floodplain management to support the services of the Building Science Team, which delivers a wide range of services related to natural hazard risk reduction serving a variety of clients.
Knowledge and responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Performs specific and moderate portions of a broader assignment of an experienced engineer with supervision of a project manager or senior-level team member as necessary.
Works on detailed and routine assignments involving technical writing, research, and/or structural design. Assignments may include development of natural hazard mitigation and building science publications, guidance, presentations, and building code and standards proposals with a focus on flood hazards.
Proposes approach to solve new problems and answer complex questions.
Must be able to work collaboratively in teams and independently when necessary
Ability to strictly adhere to Health and Safety protocols both in the office and in the field
Experience in structural and design aspects of flood-resistant buildings
Experience in technical writing
Experience in delivering conference presentations and/or technical training
Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Experience with ESRI suite of GIS software products including ArcMap
Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Maps, and other common business software and web-based applications
Understanding of floodplain management regulations and flood-resistant provisions of building codes and standards
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or a related curriculum
Engineer in Training (EIT)/Fundamentals of Engineering (FE)
4 years technical, post-degree work experience in civil engineering, structural engineering, natural hazard mitigation, building codes and standards, or related field
Due to the nature of the job, U.S. citizenship is required and the ability to hold a security clearance
Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM)
Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Maps, and other common business software and web-based applications
Preferred Requirements:
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) Or Registered Architect (RA)
Additional Information

Must be able to travel on business periodically (up to 25%) for periods of up to 7 days
Must be able to conduct field work (including post-disaster field work), tolerate variable environmental conditions, walk on uneven surfaces, and lift and carry at least 50 pounds
Must be able to provide a technical writing sample upon request
