Job Summary

Purpose and Scope:

Provides maintenance, repair and modification of diesel electric generating equipment and related equipment. Installs, removes, operates, maintains, and repairs electrical power generating and control systems, aircraft arresting systems, and associated equipment.

Position is represented by a Union Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Essential Responsibilities:

Installs, operates, maintains, troubleshoots and repairs diesel and gas generators, 3KW-2.5MW; and control systems, BAK-12 & BAK-15 aircraft arresting systems and associated equipment. Checks equipment for serviceability. Positions equipment such as gasoline and diesel engine generators, air compressors and other power generating auxiliary equipment. Installs, positions, rewinds and pre-tensions aircraft arresting systems. Certifies aircraft arresting systems as required. Checks installed equipment to ensure compliance with publications policies, and directives. Inspects, tests, and services components systems such as safety, fuel, lubrications, cooling, air pressure, pups, regulators, governors, and accessory equipment. Observes and interprets instruments such as ammeters, voltmeters, frequency meters, synchro-scopes, automatic temperature and pressure recorders, engine oil, fuel, and coolant gauges. Adjusts engine generator systems to maintain current frequency and synchronization. Maintains, modifies, and repairs power generating and control systems, aircraft arresting systems and associated equipment. Performs inspections, and interprets findings to determine corrective actions. Identified and documents engine and generator malfunctions. Uses precision test equipment, troubleshoots malfunctions, and inspects parts for excessive wear and other conditions. Removes, repairs, and replaces defective power generating components. Performs corrosion control. Inspects and replaces gauges and meters. Maintains aircraft arresting systems including hydraulic, rewind, and pneumatic components. Bench checks components and subassemblies. Tests repaired items. Reviews performance data and maintenance records to determine adequacy of maintenance. Interprets data related to power generating and aircraft arresting systems to ensure overall mission success. Maintains records; posts entries on operations, inspection and maintenance records. Records meter reading, wear and alignment measurements, fuel consumption and other data in performance logs. Furnishes information for reports and recommends changes to correct defective equipment or improve operating procedures. Proficient in MS Outlook, Excel and Word.

Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

Physical requirements include prolonged standing, moderate walking, repeated bending, and climbing, overhead work, working in cramped positions, lifting, pulling and pushing weights up to 100 pounds. Good vision (corrected or uncorrected) and good hearing (with or without a hearing aid) required. Must wear respirator as appropriate when applying cleaning solvents to generator components. Will work inside and outside in various weather conditions. Subject to rapid changes in temperature due to nature of work. Hazards include danger from gas fumes, falls, electric shock and burns, loud noise, cuts and bruises.

Minimum Requirements

High school diploma or GED.

Must have a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in power generation equipment repairs. Completion of an approved apprenticeship program desired.

Possess Journeyman status.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, and subordinates.

Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Must have a strong background with maintenance of reciprocating engines and hands-on experience with troubleshooting and maintenance for generator sets and aircraft arresting systems.

Possess thorough knowledge of the methods, hazards, and safety precautions related to diesel engines and diesel engine driven electric generators.

Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, service manuals, panels and meters.

Knowledge of diesel fuel requirements, including filter change schedules. Automated transfer switch and switchgear experience desired.

Possess verbal and written communications skills to effectively supervise employees and communicate with other company and customer personnel.

REQUIRED CERTS:

OSHA-10 card, Construction Industry

Certified in BAK-12 and BAK-15 Aircraft Arresting Systems

CPR/First-Aid card

Ability to obtain and maintain a government Secret security clearance with access to the work location.

Possess a valid state issued driver’s license.

Must be a United States Citizen.

Must pass pre-hire drug screening and Fit-for-Duty physical.

Must be able to work in a remote location with limited medical personnel and facilities.
