Job Description

AECOM is actively seeking a highly motivated ITS/Traffic Operations Engineer for immediate employment. The position is based in Southeast Michigan and will involve work out of both AECOM offices and client facilities, primarily within a Traffic Operations Center (TOC) environment. The ideal candidate will need to be a professional, self-motivated, and resourceful individual with strong problem-solving and communication skills, capable of effectively executing technical traffic engineering tasks in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

This position focuses on technical traffic engineering and operations support within a Traffic Operations Center (TOC), addressing real-time traffic challenges, enhancing roadway performance, and supporting ITS and traffic signal systems. The engineer will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement solutions for improved mobility and safety.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and optimize traffic signal timing plans using tools such as Synchro, SimTraffic, and related software.

  • Perform traffic and ITS engineering studies, analyzing roadway performance and recommending operational improvements.

  • Assist in the assessment and maintenance of traffic signal and ITS systems to ensure optimal performance.

  • Provide technical support for real-time traffic management operations, including incident management and special event coordination.

  • Collaborate with agency staff, contractors, and consultants to address operational challenges effectively.

  • Prepare technical reports, analyses, and documentation to communicate findings and recommendations.

  • Collect and analyze traffic data from the field to evaluate system performance and support engineering decisions.

  • Maintain organized project files and adhere to operational protocols and standards.

Qualifications

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, traffic engineering or an equivalent field.

  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License preferred to visit project sites, clients, and other AECOM offices when public transportation is not available. Selected candidate will undergo a Motor Vehicle Records review.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficiency in tools such as Microsoft Office Suite, Synchro/SimTraffic, and traffic simulation software.

  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to work effectively under pressure.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills to ensure successful collaboration with diverse stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop technical reports, documents, client communication, and technical memoranda

  • Ability to efficiently and effectively speak, read, and write on technical topics in the English language

  • Flexibility to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, major holidays, and during planned and unplanned events as required.

  • Relevant professional engineering experience.

  • Experience with data manipulation, management, and processing

  • Experience with traffic signal controllers, ITS devices, and related technologies.

  • Educational background focused on transportation or traffic engineering.

Additional Information

  • Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications. The expected range is $70,000.00 - $80,000.00.
