Job Description

AECOM's Water Business Line is actively seeking a Geotechnical Engineer with prior relevant experience. The position is located in New Orleans, Louisiana . This position will be a key hire for upcoming coastal restoration and flood protection projects that AECOM will be involved in during the design and construction phases.

This position is expected to begin immediately.

The Water team brings together the skills of project managers, civil engineers, H&H engineers, geotechnical engineers, structural engineers, and environmental and planning specialists to provide integrated, sustainable and cost-effective solutions. Projects include flood risk reduction systems, dams, levees, floodwalls and floodgates, water supply, tunnels/trenchless technology, roads, pumping stations, and drainage structures.

You will work alongside our project managers throughout the project design and delivery cycle, making technical decisions in various design stages of water resources projects to include supporting cost estimation proposals, feasibility studies, preliminary designs, final designs, and preparing reports and technical specifications.

This position is for a Geotechnical Engineer with prior relevant experience. We are looking for an engineer who takes a positive, professional, and client focused approach to project tasks, who demonstrates fundamental knowledge in soil mechanics, geotechnical engineering design, analyses, and engineering judgment for each project task. AECOM has the resources available to promote and grow your knowledge and skillsets to foster a long-term and rewarding career.

The Geotechnical Engineering Team in Louisiana is unique, as it works on a variety of large, high-profile projects for a variety of industries including Water, Transportation, Coastal, Environmental, and Construction. This involves:

  • Performing site investigations, soil laboratory testing interpretations, all manner of geotechnical analyses and calculations, rehabilitation designs, alternatives analyses, etc.

  • Receiving support from a group of geotechnical professionals, with 2 to 30+ years of experience, and who continuously coordinate, collaborate remotely, and foster training.

  • Completing independent project related tasks and collaborating with multiple-discipline design and project teams.

  • Offering strong communication skills and the ability to work with a team across the nation and, possibly, around the world.

You will be mentored by senior and mid-level geotechnical professionals, which is a key component of this position. Our approach intends to foster your professional growth and technical excellence by daily, in person, in office, collaboration sessions. Future benefits such as flexible hours and flexibility to work from home or remote from office may be available for this position. This role offers exciting opportunities to support the design and construction of mega, landmark projects that will be completed over the next 5 to 10+ years in Louisiana and Texas.

Candidate will, under supervision and mentorship:

  • Participate in field assignments that will include soil and rock borings, test pits, CPT soundings, geophysical testing, geotechnical instrumentation design and construction, and inspection of the construction of geotechnical features like retaining walls, foundations, dams, levees, floodwalls, and tunnels.

  • Have the opportunity to travel and work in locations within the state of Louisiana and Texas (potentially other states within the USA and around the world).

  • Design shallow and deep foundations, earth retaining structures, ground improvement, flood risk reduction structures, embankments and cut slopes, and both soft and hard rock tunnels.

  • Develop geotechnical design parameters based on field and laboratory data results.

  • Prepare and review Geotechnical Reports, Alternative Analysis Reports, etc.

  • Use computer programs, including GeoStudio, UTexas4, LPILE, GROUP, SHAFT, Plaxis, FLAC, Settle3D, and MathCAD for geotechnical analyses.

  • Review design plans and specifications for compliance with geotechnical recommendations, communicate with multiple disciplines, and provide design improvement recommendations.

  • Have the opportunity to participate in proposal production.

You will have the opportunity to work toward obtaining the AECOM Project Management Certification, if you want to go into Project Management. This is not a requirement or even necessarily a preference, but it would be encouraged after a year of working at AECOM and 5 to 10 years in Geotechnical Engineering, only if you are interested.

Candidates should be prepared to travel a minimum of 25% for field work at active construction sites to support other offices and/or AECOM employees, as needed. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate a strong technical knowledge of the principles of soil and rock mechanics, geotechnical design, manage their own time and budget, and effectively work within a multi-disciplinary team that is spread across the USA, or in some cases, the world.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • BA/BS + None or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

  • Graduated from an ABET accredited university with a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.

  • U.S. Citizenship required, due to the nature of the work.

  • Master’s Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, or in progress.

  • Engineer in Training Certification (EIT).

  • Candidate will be working toward Professional Engineering (PE) License.

  • Preferred software experience with GeoStudio (SLOPE-W, SEEP-W, SIGMA-W, etc.), LPILE, APILE, GROUP, SHAFT, Plaxis, FLAC, Settle3D, and MathCAD.

  • Prior relevant professional and/or internship geotechnical engineering experience.

  • Must have strong technical progression within fundamental topics in geotechnical engineering.

  • Experience or knowledge in planning and completing drilling, field investigations, laboratory testing, advanced material characterization, seepage analysis, slope stability analysis, settlement analysis, and construction of dams, levees, channel improvements, and other heavy earthwork projects.

  • Understanding of soft soils in Louisiana and/or expansive soils in Texas and their impacts to design.

  • Experience in construction inspection, such as deep foundation monitoring and testing; groundwater monitoring; and concrete placement monitoring.

  • Willingness of overnight and/or multiple day field inspections during project critical tasks.

  • Ability to perform daily tasks 75-100% in office with potentially traveling less than 25%. Traveling time may increase depending on project assignments.

  • A positive attitude that motivates the project team.

  • Ability to work on fast paced challenging and complex projects.

  • Ability to work on multiple ongoing projects at the same time.
