Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a highly motivated Tunnel Design and Construction Engineering Leader as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for employment in AECOM’s Global Tunnel Center of Excellence. The candidate will have responsibilities to the Director of Tunnel and Underground Engineering and will support projects worldwide with a focus on projects in the Americas.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Be a leader and SME in tunneling and underground projects for Transportation and Water/wastewater Tunnels

  • Lead a design team as project manager or project engineer or as SME

  • Help participate in the development of the Global Tunnel Practice strategic plans; build relationships with public and private clients (contractors) and the industry leaders

  • Perform design reviews, constructability analyses, construction logistics and planning, construction cost estimating, development of innovative solutions for DB and DBB tunneling and underground projects during the pursuit and implementation stages.

  • Help grow the tunneling and underground practice in the firm by the participating in the development of pursuit strategies, technical concepts, and proposal technical approaches for tunnels and underground projects

  • Be part of pink and red team reviews and provide technical oversight of proposal preparation.

  • Assist in establishing and developing teaming relationships with other consulting firms and/or contractors as necessary

  • Lead risk management tasks and perform quality management oversight on projects during design and construction stages. Develop Risk Management Plan and Quality Plan on projects and oversee their implementations.

  • Collaborate with the Tunnel Practice Chief Engineers and on subject of expertize to recommend design concepts, solutions, and construction methodologies

  • Provide technical oversight on technical matters during execution of projects

  • Attend industry events, serve on panels, and publish to foster AECOM’s tunneling and underground engineering practice and be active in the tunneling industry.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering field – civil, geotechnical, structural

  • Minimum 12+ years of tunnel and underground design and construction experience

  • Experience in tunneling or geotechnical engineering

  • Professional Registration (PE or Equivalent) or eligible within 12 months

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree preferred

  • Publications in technical journals and conferences and seminars

  • 25+ years of experience in tunneling is ideal

  • Thoroughly knowledgeable of tunneling geotechnical aspects, difficult ground conditions, and various tunneling methods and techniques

  • Candidate shall be a “seller-doer”, independent thinker, and self-starter

  • Strong relationships and name recognition within the industry

  • Membership with relevant professional organizations and active participation in National tunneling and/or geotechnical associations

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

  • Leadership characteristics

  • Strategic thinker, with demonstrated collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment and gain the support of others

  • Ability to work in a matrix organization

  • Ability to work with minimal direction

  • Ability and willingness to travel
