Job Description

AECOM is actively seeking highly talented and hardworking additions to our growing transit systems practice is looking to hire a Sr. Power Engineer with a minimum of 6 years of traction power experience. This unique and exciting position offers the opportunity to work in a developing practice with great growth opportunities, while receiving support from a global system practice which leads the nation in transit systems design. The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • The primary role of this position is to prepare design drawings and documents, technical specifications, cost estimates, proposals, calculations, and studies associated with traction power system for electrified railways ac and dc.

  • Technical competence in all elements of transit traction power engineering

  • Ability to perform project work as well as serve as a technical leader

  • Ability to prepare and guide drafters/designers and less experienced engineers to prepare One-line diagrams, elementary and wiring diagrams, SCADA, communications, conduit and cable sizing/routing, substation physical layouts, selection of substation equipment, writing of substation equipment specifications, proposal development, construction cost estimates, and project scheduling, test plans, field tests, reports, analysis, and technical studies for traction power systems.

  • Ability to perform protective relay settings and coordination studies.

  • Ability to recommend appropriate actions to ensure compliance with all client, local, state and federal regulations including AREMA railway standards, the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), the National Electrical Safety Code (IEEE C2), and other applicable US.

  • Ability to exercise of judgment on details of work in making preliminary selections and adaptations of engineering alternatives.

  • Ability to communicate well with others and support business development opportunities

  • A Professional Engineers license is preferred, but not required

  • Willingness and ability to travel nationally and internationally to all AECOM, partner, and client office locations, including project offices, if applicable

  • Ability to perform site investigations and walk-downs in high-voltage substations and along electrified railroads

Qualifications

Must Have Skills/Experience (Including any required Certifications):

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited education program.

  • 6 years of Traction Power design experience with 750 V dc third rail and overhead; 12 kV ac, 25 Hz, 2 x 12.5 kV ac, 60 Hz, 2 x 25 kV, 60 Hz.

  • Extensive experience in the execution and task leadership for design calculations, plans development, specifications and technical report writing

  • Demonstrated ability to design with constructability in mind throughout all steps of design process

  • Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Professional Engineering (PE) Registration

  • Experience with SEPTA, WMATA, LIRR, NJ Transit, PATH, PATCO and Amtrak Traction Power

  • Experience in design/build and other alternative delivery projects

  • experience in writing of technical papers and technical presentations

  • Experience technical studies for traction power systems, including train performance simulations, ac and dc load flow simulations, short circuit calculations, EMF/EMI studies

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills and have the ability to draw from the skills of others to bring innovation to serve the needs of our clients

  • Strategic thinker; must show ability to foresee and be willing to advance long term goal achievement over short term gains, and realization of when a choice between the two is appropriate

  • Self-motivator able and willing to foresee, plan for, and act on risks and opportunities aligned with business goals and aligned within area organizational structure

  • Leadership positions held on professional societies or technical committees

  • Experience in providing technical training

  • Experience in writing project proposals and delivery of oral presentations for purpose of business development
