Job Summary

The Central Midwest Area Cultural Resource Division of AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Archaeological Technician for temporary employment with our Phoenix, AZ office. However, the candidate could be working on various projects in the Upper Mid-West, or elsewhere on the Great Plains, including surveys, evaluative testing and data recovery projects, depending on staffing needs throughout the Central Region. This is a part-time variable position, meaning, work days and times will be determined on an as-needed basis. The ideal candidate will have the requisite education and experience to be immediately listed on AECOM’s cultural resources permits in AZ or other states in the northern Plains. Experience as a crew chief is preferred for this position.

In most cases, this position reports to the Field Director or Archaeological Supervisor but must also be able to work effectively in both the field and laboratory, either independently or as part of a team.

Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Conducting archaeological survey, shovel testing, investigations/excavations; screening and describing soil deposits. Preference will be given to candidates with 2-5 years field experience.

  • Documenting archaeological and historic resources. Must be able to take accurate field notes; draw accurate profiles and plan view sketches

  • The position may also require completing site forms, narrative site descriptions, and written contributions to reports.

  • Using a digital camera to photo-document artifacts, features, and sites and keeping an accurate photo log.

  • Processing artifacts (wash, mark and catalog) and performing basic analysis of artifacts

  • Working on complex and challenging projects with little senior assistance

  • Carrying out complex or novel assignments requiring the development of new and/or improved techniques and procedures

  • Consulting with supervisor concerning unusual problems and developments

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • 2+ years of experience in archaeological fieldwork and analysis

  • Prior experience assisting field technicians with implementing fieldwork protocols, data collection, field logistics

  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of equipment and technology used to perform recording of artifacts and archaeological surveys

  • Knowledge of basic field survey and excavation techniques, ability to process (wash, catalog and mark) recovered archaeological artifacts, properly fill out field and laboratory forms, perform extensive manual labor including excavation with shovels and moving buckets and wheelbarrows filled with dirt

  • Basic knowledge of GIS applications, Microsoft applications

  • Excellent work ethic and team-player attitude

  • Strong attention to detail, with proven ability to follow specific instructions

  • Ability to effectively express his or herself orally and in writing to other project staff

  • Ability to write well, including artifact, feature, site, and landscape descriptions

  • Basic computer skills; Microsoft Office applications

  • Position requires flexibility to travel overnight and out of state for up to 3+ months at a time.

  • U.S. Citizenship required

  • Must pass a State and Federal criminal history/security background check; many projects/ clients are security sensitive.

  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and clean driving record.

  • Physically able, with or without an accommodation, to work in outdoor environments with uneven terrain, variable outdoor conditions including heat, cold, moisture, and dryness; position requires frequent repetitive bending & stooping, standing/walking, operation of vehicles, and lifting of less than 25 pounds; occasionally working with arms above shoulder level, power gripping/squeezing (hand tools, levers, etc.), working at heights, and performing repetitive or fine hand movements; rarely climbing stairs, working in an environment of heavy, moving, dangerous equipment, performing work in confined spaces, performing keyboard/mouse operations, working alone in isolated/remote areas, and lifting 25 - 75 pounds. Position will include wearing associated personal protective equipment, including safety glasses/goggles, gloves, safety shoes/boots, hard hat, long-sleeve shirts, and tick guards.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology, History, Museum Studies, or related field and have attended an archaeological field school

  • General familiarity with cultural resource management protocols and processes, including Section 106 and NEPA compliance, is helpful to understanding cultural resource management.

  • Some cultural resource survey activities

  • Some experience with conducting laboratory analysis of both prehistoric and historic material

  • Experience with data collection using a handheld GPS unit

  • CPR/First Aid Training
