Job Summary

AECOM is seeking a Research and Development Scientist 3 for our Pittsburgh, PA location.

1) This position requires a Degree in Engineering or equivalent and at least 2 years of experience in the

synthesis and characterization of catalysts via microwave chemistry techniques. Experience in the design

and operation of microwave reactor systems is highly desirable.

2) The candidate will provide R&D support to NETL-AECOM Carbon Utilization staff.

3) The R&D support shall focus on developing new catalyst materials for CO2 conversion, physical

characterization of these catalysts, and initial investigations of reaction chemistry. Catalysts will be

synthesized and characterized via microwave chemistry techniques. These catalysts will be evaluated for the

ability to be used in reactor systems and chemical processes for the conversion of CO2 to valuable chemicals

with a focus on systems that look promising for scaling up.

4) The candidate will have experience in the following characterization techniques:

a. EXAFS and XANES synchrotron techniques such as those at Brookhaven National Laboratory.

b. Neutron and X-ray Scattering techniques such as those available at Argonne and Oak Ridge National

Laboratories

c. Transmission electron microscopy.

d. Scanning electron microscopy, including SEM-EDX mapping.

e. Diffraction techniques including x-ray diffraction and electron diffraction.

f. Raman microscopy.

g. Gas and liquid chromatography.

5) The candidate will participate in weekly group meetings which are designed to allow the applicant to discuss

current research and promote discussion with fellow researchers. A weekly status report will be required.

6) This position will require extensive interface with customers and potential collaborative partners, so excellent

verbal and written communication skills are required. The complexity of information to be managed will

require excellent organization skills and attention to detail.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelors degree and 5 years of job-related experience in biology, chemistry, economics, geology, physics, mathematic or related scientific field or a Masters degree or equivalent. Excellent communications and analytical skills, working knowledge of computer systems and integrated software application programs. Position may require travel. Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. Degree in Engineering or equivalent

Preferably, the prospective employee will be familiar with working in a Government-operated National

Laboratory environment.
