Job Responsibilities/Duties

Mechanical Engineer supporting projects in the Direct Feed Low-Activity Waste (DFLAW) Projects Engineering organization. Projects supported by this position include upgrades to Hanford tank farms, including tank waste solids and cesium removal capability, required to support treated waste feed to the LAW vitrification facility of the Waste Treatment Plant (WTP). Role includes representing and supporting system Design Authorities and Engineering Management, providing real time problem solving in a fast pace project delivery environment. Job scope includes daily coordination with the WRPS project team in Richland and off-site design agent teams together with resolution of RFI's, review of design schedules and deliverable review.

Acts as a fully competent engineer in all conventional aspects of the subject matter or the functional area of the assignments. Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection and substantial adaptation or modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria. Demonstrates interpolative patterned thinking and requires minimal guidance.

May function as lead engineer on a task force or special assignment, coordinating the activities of the task force engineers.

  • Provides engineering guidance, calculations, analysis, studies, and recommendations for a specialized segment of engineering within schedule and budget of an assigned project.

  • Support preparation of Statements of Work, design products, procurements, specifications, etc.

  • Provide technical and programmatic leadership, including coordination of activities with multiple internal and external entities, performing technical and cost/benefits evaluations, and developing task plans and schedules.

  • Provide oversight of and technical direction to design, fabrication, and construction subcontractors.

  • Prepare and approve design media.

  • Prepare and approve Engineering documents, evaluations, and calculations.

  • Perform routine administrative activities/duties on time (routine training, safety meetings, TIS, continuing training, staff meetings).

  • Ensure all documents prepared are "stand alone."

  • Seek to understand engineering work assignments and to be self-directed.

  • Be customer service oriented, completing assignments safely, on time, and within budget.

  • Assist in provision of technical guidance to subcontractors in the execution of design (e.g., ensure use of correct design inputs, utilization of accepted analysis methodologies, design standards, and verification methods).

Required Qualifications

BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering degree with 5 years of related experience.

Desired Qualifications

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills needed to facilitate project milestones. Must be able to clearly and concisely communicate to peers and management.

Must take prompt action to accomplish assigned objectives and understand/identify issues and opportunities.

Experience with nuclear application of engineering tasks.
