Job Summary

Job Summary/Responsibilities

  • Develop and validates regional highway and transit networks in VTA Travel Demand Model using Citilabs Cube Voyager.

  • Apply VTA’s current trip-based travel demand model (in Citilabs Cube Voyager) to analyze the impacts of proposed transportation infrastructure investments on congestion relief, transit ridership, mobility, accessibility, environmental quality, equity, and other performance measures.

  • Apply VTA’s current trip-based travel demand model to quantify the impacts of transportation and land-use policies using metrics described above.

  • Analyze transportation Big Data, such as NPMRDS and HPMS, and large-scale demographic and travel survey data (such as California State Household Travel Survey, American Community Survey, etc.) using SQL, R, and Tableau.

  • Develop codes (Python, SQL, JAVA, etc.) to automate travel demand model calibration and validation processes.

  • Conduct statistical analyses to test hypothesis and develop behavior models as they relate to travel behavior modeling.

  • Apply VTA’ new Activity-Based Model in the CT-RAMP framework to conduct testing and sensitivity analyses as VTA transitions from the current trip-based model to the new activity-based model.

  • Develop interactive GIS-based visualization tools, using R Shiny, R Markdown, Leaflet, or other applicable technologies to display inputs and outputs of travel demand models and data pertaining to transportation planning.

  • Present results of technical analyses in project meetings

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in transportation planning, civil engineering, environmental

science/engineering, operations research, statistics, data science, computer science, economics (with an emphasis on econometrics), urban planning (with a focus on data science) or a related field

  • 2+ years of professional experience in the field of transportation planning, traffic engineering, or related experience with an emphasis on modeling

and simulation. A Master’s Degree may substitute for one year of the required experience.

  • Solid understanding of the theories, principles, and practices of travel demand forecasting

  • Demonstrated experience in developing travel forecasts and/or calibrating/validating travel demand models in one or more transportation modeling package (e.g., Cube, EMME, TransCAD, or VISUM)

  • Programming skills in Python, Java, C++, or other computing languages

  • Experience in using statistical analysis/database software (e.g., SQL, R, PostsgreSQL)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in the disciplines described above

  • Demonstrated experience in Dynamic Traffic Assignment models

  • Solid understanding of discrete choice models

  • Demonstrated experience in the application and/or development of Activity- Based Models in the framework of CT-RAMP, DaySim, or ActivitySim

  • Demonstrated experience in the application of land-use modeling (e.g., Cube Land, UrbanSim, PECAS)

  • Understanding of survey methodologies and experience in analyzing travel survey data

  • Experience in travel demand model estimation
